"Time In A City" (a beginning).

got back a while ago from our first brainstorming session for "Time In A City". really glad that sio and yaoks put in the effort to organise a get-together to discuss the project, and especially sio for nudging me a bit into attending. one week of work was enough to render me very lazy and unmotivated to use my brain, but when it came down to it, the excitement of being involved in some creative expression returned.

what i most appreciate about this project is its creative liberty. given that the brief is not only wide in terms of interpretation, but it also allows for non-architectural works. effectively, it opens our doors to a wider range of possibilities, but that's not the best part of it just yet. the best thing about having such liberty lies in the fact that we have to exercise an extra load of criticalness in coming up with our own framework in which we can really start designing. to me, it's always harder to pose a good question than it is to provide a good answer.

hope yaoks breaks free from his fear that our ideas would be siphoned, and finally get down to documenting our process on this blog.

our discussions brought us to a few spots in the Bras Basah region. from meeting at Ken Yeang's National Library to Bugis's TCC, we moved to Geco at Sunshine Plaza, before we ventured through SMU (enroute to Thumps@Substation, which turned out to be closed) and eventually landed in Curry Flavour (or something to that effect) at Stamford House. it was a really nice day; most glad i hadn't stayed at home.

it was good that i finally had the opportunity to check SMU out a bit, and i must say i did rather enjoy my short tour of the school. whilst i hadn't been too impressed by the few drive-pass i'd made during its construction phase, the finished school was more impressive than i had imagined. naysayers of its design, with respect to its contextual misplacement, might have their point, but you simply cannot fault spatial beauty when you finally experience it. the three photos i have above do no justice to the might of its design, so i do urge people to pop by sometime. (i also wish that i had slightly better photographic skills. though at the same time i believe really great works cannot be fully translated into print.)

for those who visited SMU, as part of our 'aki camp', during its construction phase: did you all learn much? and did you all like the project then?

btw chez, if you're reading this, can you please increase your font for future posts? i really like to prolong my perfect eyesight for as long as i can :)

i also know of a few a&as to nus itself, of which one is already completed save for defects (u hall) and the music conservatory seems a bit interesting at this point in time (design development i think). all these educational institutions getting facelifts...

anyway, coincidentally, i only found out yesterday what lecorby means. i'm so slow my gawd!!
