healesville wildlife health centre

I mentioned a little bit of the costa surface at Healesville here and would like to say that despite my lack of understanding in the significance of its making, I have been there personally and thoroughly enjoyed the spatial experience (whether or not it was the intended effect I'm not sure).

From the outside it looks like a part of the facade. When you step in you see a circular room in the middle with video projections on the curved glass inside and imagine opening the door and realising you are outside again and the costa surface is actually a skylight and internal courtyard in the middle of the building. What was most amazing about this video screening room is the sound of the wind rushing in through the tunnels and the centre seemed so quiet except for the wind. Because the videos are projected on a glass surface you can see beyond the happenings of the medical centre like the ongoing open heart bird surgery. Damn cool.

Most people have a lot to say about Minifie and sometimes not in a good way but I was in his class briefly for scripting lessons and we had quite intriguing conversations during our smoke breaks (we were the only two smokers in class. er..). I espeically enjoyed one whereby he pointed out to me all the basic geometry that made up the city view from the balcony and we talked about how people are more fascinated with new forms but unfortunately not so many are investigating new simple geometry..

hmm..care to explain a bit what was the role of the video projections?

if it has no role then well i wld say it is jus "damn cool" wallpaper* mag type of architecture.

well first and foremost the video content focuses on the work that the medical center does through documentaries on the issues in wildlife. the scenes were rather explicit showing half dead and injured wombats being rescued etc. and behind the screen you can see the operation rooms and the animal ward. so that was pretty cool.

secondly, the watching the videos in an outdoor space with the wind blocking out all noises (besides the sound from speakers)perhaps creates a bigger impact than a closed off room, especially w.r.t the nature of content.

on another note, a more interesting one, the word 'role' throws me off all the time. are roles given or are they subjective? does role equal function or effect?
