[notes] Time In A City: Travelling (Car).

Travelling (Car) 01: On PIE Into Bedok (permalink).

timeincity01to the right is just a sketch of what i hope passengers on the train will see outside of the carriage. not necessarily words--though i'm beginning to wonder if it'd be fun to put a message as well--but some markers that would lend passengers some indication of the speed of travel.

please take a look at the video recording (above) i did in Rachel Ho's car, travelling along PIE (towards Changi) and into Bedok North, where i live. the night recording gives an insight into the various markers that are available to the commuter of their speed of travel. other than the obvious change in landscape, the only other markers are: lamp-posts, trees, white road dividers, road direction arrows. in fact, if you see the video (which you should play with a suitable soundtrack like Gary Jules's "Mad World" in the background), you'd see how the different markers interact with each other at a seemingly different speed; then there're the very evenly planted lamp-posts and trees that really help to even out the whole experience, and shield the traffic from the buildings behind, and vice versa.

do have a look at the video.

serangoonthere's also a recording of our travelling along Serangoon Road (below). this particular recording interests me as we're actually moving through a series of overhead decorations for Deepavali. it's a double-edged sword, overhead road decorations have always been quite a successful device employed to teleport motorists into this temporary glitzy zone of joyous celebrations and good tidings. always a lovely welcome for festive seasons: Chinese New Year at Chinatown, Deepavali at Little India, Hari Raya Puasa at Geylang Serai and Christmas at Orchard Road.

i guess the initial idea of employing this modus operandi could be successful, but at the same at risk of being just as one-dimensional as these decors have made the experience.

there is an installation i think in the subways of japan, which uses layers of glass and some lighting effect to create something like a moving 3D hologram effect as the train moves past (as per illustrated in the Y,O,U in the mrt train thingy). i try to find haha...

sweets,

these "markers" you're referring to are precisely what i was referring to on my earlier post. like your "Y-O-U", i'm thinking of introducing some form of marker (light/shadow, structures and what-nots) that work together with the existing markers on our site instead of a total new introduction.

As for the site, i'm working on the research and presentation. i just need 1 or 2 days to finish it off.

i suggest yaoks, yourself and i meet again on the weekend after you finish your work with Lady Boss! got some ideas as to how it might actually work.

unfortunately i am not equipped with a scanner!

sio, i'd be engaged with boss lady for a good week, so it'd be better if we keep our discussion running meanwhile. try to put up images for discussion, like CAD/ photoshop a simple series of sections.

think we'd benefit from it.

i'm still waiting for yaoks to put up the sketches from the first round of discussion. also, wondering where the files are that were meant to be disseminated amongst the three of us?

i will need some time to finish up the site images! you know my difficulty with regards to internet access at home. i only get about 1/2 hr after work before dinner to source the net. but the photoshopping is still ongoing. sorry for the delay and i think we all understand how tiring it is to work after work...

this weekend i promise!
