downright uncanny

artist

ok heres the catch. this is khengsoon's 1999 Eco Pod Cabin standing side by side to my 2006's Tree-House in Punggol. i swear i have never seen this work before until today, and he has never once dabbled on my butterpaper giving me any hint of how my design should develop.

this is scary...

graduating corridor exhibition

CityEx07_Poster

featuring the works of our graduating non year out batch.
in continuation of NUS's fine tradition of exhibiting the best works along claustrophobic long corridors, we manage to actually get allocated a 30m x 2m strip of space in vivocity.

shall update more when i get down vivocity to check it out (and watch pirates of the carribean)

and hor do check out the interview with our very own prodigal son hann. wahahaha.

[notes] Time In A City: Renderings.

TIAC-capture01
TIAC-capture02
TIAC-capture03

sio is sleeping on the floor behind me as i'm writing this. we just spent a few rather unproductive hours in the DDS doing little till i began producing the 'renderings' you see above on sketch-up. perhaps it's because i've not done this in a while, but paneling is suddenly quite a task. somehow my most recent experience with this when doing my portfolio had conveniently escaped me, leaving me to imagine that presentation layouts are simple! turns out that distiling the past few weeks' work into an A1 panel is not quite what i had pictured it to be.

the good news is, i'm pretty happy with the renders above, and am feeling more motivated and inspired. i find i need inspiration from my work more than i do from other people's works in order to come up with the correct layout. this is not to say that others' presentations aren't good; lots of them are very moving, but i feel that every work has its intrinsic quality that needs to be realised in order for the most appropriate panel to appear. what works for others certainly doesn't always work for everyone else.

i mean, that is unless of course you're a really good 'photo-copier'...

[notes] Time In A City: Towards the Final of Final Bits.

whilst adding members between frames.
photoshopped scene.

okay, so we're going to miss tomorrow's deadline.

apparently neither DHL nor Fedex can actually send documents overnight, unless it's within the region -- sio can elaborate on the specifics. realising that yesterday, we decided to go easy on ourselves and take our time to panel the loose bits. there're much sketches and notes to reduce to bite sized bits for the single A1 panel.

honestly, i don't care if our Russian compatriots are as sticky about deadlines and penalties, i just want to finish this and send it in anyway. besides, as sio notes, judging doesn't occur till december.

go us!

[notes] Time In A City: Moving towards Finalisation.

[following discussions here.]

realised that drawing on white board helps a whole lot; green for dee, red for mexiao.

mexiao has joined our team for the competition has sio and yaok's busy schedules are preventing them from participating in the final leg of production. we're running a tight ship now as we have to either FedEx or DHL the submission by Friday, seeing as how it deadlines Sunday -- do our Russians compatriot not rest on Sundays?

for many reasons, though mainly pertaining to the amount of time left, mexiao and i have tweaked the conceptual strategy a bit so that we might actually be able to produce something in time. no less challenging, i assure you, but admittedly a shade or two less ambitious than when sio, yaoks and i began. we've also changed our test site from Plaza Singapura to the main stretch of Orchard Road, spanning Ngee Ann City to Wisma Atria. the change would allow us to capitalise on the linear boulevard in front of the two shopping malls.

tight ship! sio and yaoks are very welcome to drop by anytime from now till Friday to help in the process and maybe run through the progress a little to check that everything's in place. otherwise, wish us luck!

and yes, all our names will be in; we started this together and will end it together.

...
..
.

hope there're people visiting neovox these few days. i'd really like to go down and see her since i live so near her (we're a few blocks away from one another), but the competition has tied me down a bit. mexiao and i will pay her a visit asap. anyone headed down these two days, please send her our regards, we constantly have her on our minds.

i've extensively used both my and outofscale flickr.com accounts for the month of October, so the pictures are getting a bit messy with some of them uploaded at solvent_d while others at outofscale. bear with the disorganised archiving for a while.

p/s: just realised that doing this takes an inordinate amount of time! gee...

.

i've got the last week to-visit links archived, but have not had the time to sort them out just yet. will put that up asap. will be busy in the next few days helping mexiao with her design, and at an even later date, probably help whoever needs help. sio and yaoks should take note that submissions are on next monday, and come forth to render their valuable services to our good friends back in nus.
